Our Mission

Underage drinking happens. It’s a bad idea, but it happens. Teachers, administrators, parents, and peers might discourage it. But it happens.

The Empty Glass Society’s mission is not to end underage drinking (we wish). We’re too realistic for that.

Instead, our mission is to educate our community on the consequences of underage drinking. To inform the decisions being made and share our perspective.

Because we believe that the best—and probably the only—way to mitigate the danger of underage drinking is to talk about it. Shed light on it. Develop and share resources and expertise. Uncover the reasons for the habits. Erase stigmas. And hopefully, change the conversation.

BTW: when we say “underage drinking,” we’re also thinking “substance abuse generally.” JSYK.

Our Work So Far

We have marshaled student volunteers across numerous yeshiva high schools. Compiled the insights of substance abuse experts, mental health professionals, social workers, law enforcement personnel, and others on the subject of underage drinking in the yeshiva high school community. Built resources for those seeking to improve their habits, as well as those needing immediate assistance. Laid the groundwork for a collective of students—run entirely by students, with adult allies in the wings—ready to organize around the issue of underage drinking and ease its grip on our community.

We have visited multiple high schools, universities, and community events to spread our message (visit ‘EGS News’ page for details).
